Mrs. Della Sullivan was born to Junus and Nellie Drake on June 15, 1928 in Moss Bluff, La.
She graduated from Westlake High and received her education at Sowela Tech in Business Management and Supervision. She was employed at McNeese State University after 34 years before retiring and was the first African American in that position.
Della Sullivan was a self made environmentalist fighting for justice in her community of Mossville and Lake Charles, La. until her passing. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Mossville Environmental Action Now, Mossville Steering Committee, Mothers of Mossville, North Lake Charles Concerned Citizens, Citizens against Contamination, EHCO, Fisherville Environmental Action Now, Calcasieu League Environmental Action Now, Concerned Citizens Table of Lake Charles and Family, and Friend of Louisiana Children.
Mrs. Della Sullivan and her late husband worked to set a new foundation for the next church, Saints Memorial Church of God in Christ. She attended and became one of the mothers of the church in which she loved for over 76 years.
"Mrs. Della" as she was known by students , family and friends that knew her. If they were hungry she fed them, If they needed to talk she had a listening ear. Always helping all that she could.
Della Sullivan lived in Moss Bluff all of her life until she married the love of her life the late Fred Sullivan of Westlake/Mossville Louisiana. They were married for 45 years and to this union she had five children, (late) Sandra A. (Sullivan) Ryan, Rosa N. Caillier, (late) Fred Sullivan Jr., (late) Gwendolyn F. (Sullivan) Fontenot and Debra M. (Sullivan) Richard Ramirez.
She leaves behind her two surviving daughters, Rosa N. (Sullivan) Caillier and Debra M. (Sullivan) Richard Ramirez; host of grandchildren and great grandchildren .
She was preceded in death by her parents, Junus and Nellie Drake; her husband, Fred Sullivan; her daughters, Sandra (Sullivan) Ryan, Gwendolyn F. (Sullivan) Fontenot; her only son, Fred Sullivan Jr.; her great great grandson, Taveon J. Cailler.
