Bernice Ned Mackey entered the world on May 16, 1932 to Kelly and Annie Jason Ned in Ville Platte, Louisiana. She was the second child born to this union.
The family moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana and was active members of the Starlight Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend D.L. Carter. In her early years on a bright summer day, a tall handsome man from De Ridder, Louisiana came to visit the Ned Family; Donald L. Mackey was introduced to the lovely Bernice. They married in 1955, lasting 65 years until his death. To this union three children were born.
Dr. Mackey was a born leader, who had a heart for Evangelism and Outreach Ministry; in which her daughter is continuing to carry on today. In her tenure at Starlight, she formed the food pantry and clothing ministry, served as President of Mission Women, Superintendent of Baptist Training Union, established the Junior Ushers for there were only senior ushers at that time, Sunday school secretary, Deaconess and a member of the Senior Choir.
Prepared for ministry she was ready to serve when her husband was called to Pastor the Gospel of John Baptist Church formally known as St. John Baptist Church. She was ordained as a Minister of the Gospel on June 2, 2006. WIth all the challenges that ministry holds she was first lady for over 25 years until the retirement of Pastor Mackey. After retirement the family united with Christian Baptist where she was a member of Sunday school and Deaconess.
On the state level Dr. Mackey worked as the registrar for Women Auxiliary for the Louisiana Baptist Convention under the leadership of Sister Hilda J. Guillory and was also the coordinator of the Ann J. Stewart Scholarship Fund for Calcasieu M & E Association. She was also a member of the Inter-denominal minister's wives.
In Christian education Dr. Mackey attained 16 degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies, Calvary Theological Seminary (New Orleans), June 3, 2005; Masters from Corner Stone University; Doctorate in Christian Counseling and Church Administration, Vision of Faith Theological Seminary (Lake Charles), September 16, 2014 to name a few.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Minister Donna M. Mackey and Joy Mackey; granddaughter, Octavia A. Mackey; brothers, Michael "Mitch" (Connie) Ned and Rev. Gervis (Isie) Ned; son in love, Charles (Malinda) Stevens; best friend, Sister Hilda J. Guillory.
Dr. Mackey was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Dr. Donald Louis Mackey Sr.; her son, Donald L. Mackey Jr.; sisters, Gloria Ned, Annie Jane Ned Carter, Carrie Ned Greene and brother, Bervis Ned.
