Josephine Marie DeJean-Harris was born on December 3, 1952, to Mr. Hammond Brooks and Lovey Ophelia Arbuthnot DeJean. She was the fourth of 12 children born of that union. Growing up, she was fondly called “Jo’Phine” because her younger siblings could not pronounce Josephine.

Jo’Phine was a proud 1970 graduate of W.O. Boston High School. She accepted Christ at a young age and later became a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church. She was also a retired veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

The military chapter of her life began immediately after her 18th birthday in 1971. Being a proud Marine, she served her country as Sergeant Major Josephine Harris, serving here in the United States of America and in other countries abroad. She also worked as a substitute teacher for the Calcasieu Parish School Board and for Borden’s. Her last place of employment was at the Isle of Capri Casino, where she worked as a blackjack dealer.

While in the Marines, she met and married Allen Gilbert Harris. From that union, she became known as Josie Harris. On November 22, 1975, Josie Harris and Alan became the proud parents of one son, Kimani. She was later made the proud grandmother of two beautiful granddaughters, Asher and Alana, whom she always bragged about and flashed pictures of to anyone she spoke to about them.

Josie Harris leaves to cherish her memories with her son, Alan Kenyatta Kimani Harris, and two granddaughters, Asher Samara Harris and Alana Lynn Harris, all of Detroit, Michigan. Four brothers, Dan Alec (Norma) Arbuthnot Sr., Hilbert George DeJean, Haywood James (Kathy) DeJean, and Harvey Darnell DeJean, are all of Lake Charles, LA. Six sisters: Jacquline Ophelia DeJean Dugas of Lake Charles, LA; Jennifer Melvin DeJean Jackson of Dallas, TX; Lovey Joyce DeJean (John) Guillory; Yolanda Juanette DeJean Duhon; and Joan Desiree DeJean (Larry) Rogers, all of Lake Charles, LA. She also leaves to cherish her memories a great-nephew-in-law, Christopher Joseph (Kaleshan) Brown, whom she fondly called “Lil Boy," four godchildren, Toni Pete of Houston, TX; Ericka Tyler Carter, Isaiah “Zay” Orphey, and Damon Babineaux, all of Lake Charles, LA; and Kevin McEwen of Centerville, VA.

Josie Harris was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Hammond Brooks and Mrs. Lovey Ophelia Arbuthnot DeJean, her oldest sister Lizzie “Liz” DeJean Land, and a younger brother, Hammond Brooks “Starr” DeJean Jr., and two great nieces, Kennedy Patrice DeJean, all of Lake Charles, LA, and Davisha Juanita Rosezerika Harris, of Gloster, MS.
