Margarette Guion Obituary

Our beloved crown jewel, Mother Margarette Guion, passed from labor to reward on March 17, 2025, at the age of 100. She was born on September 22, 1924, in Frierson, Louisiana, to Boykin Mitchell and Clarisie Williams Mitchell. She was the fourth of nine children and excelled in life, receiving her education from the DeSoto Parish Public Schools.

From an early age, Margarette knew the Lord and was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church in Frierson. She grew up on a family farm, where she worked diligently picking cotton, gardening, and milking cows.

In 1948, Margarette married Julius Guion, and together they moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana, where they raised their family. She became a faithful member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend D.J. Jones, and continued her service for nearly 75 years under the leadership of Rev. Elmore Garner. During her early years, she served with the Missionary, Choir, and Usher Board.

Margarette’s warm personality, caring heart, and love for serving the Lord and her family were evident to all who knew her. She never met a stranger, and was known for giving unsolicited advice, often reminding others, "You wouldn't have what you have if it wasn't for the Lord."

Proud of her country roots in North Louisiana, she once planted a row of cotton in her front yard for her children to see what it looked like before it was processed. Margarette often shared stories of how her family grew everything they ate and drank. She credited her longevity to an environment free of chemicals, and her favorite daily saying was, “Keep a Living.”

Margarette had a true passion for sewing and dressed many of the teachers at Washington’s Elementary and Middle Schools, along with numerous family members and friends. She also loved cooking, gardening, and sharing her vegetables and flowers. Her favorite pastimes included chatting on the phone, sitting on her porch, and watching mind-challenging game shows to participate in.

In addition to her family and church, Margarette enjoyed visiting Abraham’s Tent, offering encouragement to men and women to find Christ and seek meaningful employment. She was a dedicated messenger for Christ and loved inviting others to her church to hear Reverend Garner preach the Word.

Margarette’s health began to decline after the storms of Hurricane Laura and Hurricane Delta. The devastation and environmental changes were overwhelming, leading to numerous health challenges.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Boykin and Clarisie Mitchell; her husband, Julius Guion; her brothers, Houston Mitchell, Sam Mitchell, Wilbert Mitchell, and John Mitchell; her sisters, Lela Simpson and Fannie May; her daughter, Dorris Croxton; and her grandson, Julius Jermaine Guion.

Margarette’s legacy will be carried on by her three daughters, Clara Cooper (Ralph) of Houston, Texas, Janie Guion, and Linda Butler, both of Lake Charles, Louisiana; her son, John Guion of Lake Charles; sister, Doris of Frierson, La.; brother, Boykin Mitchell Jr. of Shreveport, La.;  nine grandchildren, Dwayne Cooper (Tammy), Tonja Johnson (Calvin), Sharalyn Sweeten, Wendy Jenkins, LaDesma  Berard , Marceline Berard Pickron, Jessica LeBlanc (Jon Eric), Christen Butler; eleven great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; two Godchildren, Gregory Ford and Darlene Hooker; and a host of relatives and friends.

She will be deeply missed by all who loved her, including many nieces, nephews, bonus sons and daughters.
