Mary I. Stewart was born in the small Grand Coteau, LA on April 22, 1931 to the parents of Carlton Jean and Irene Johnson. She attended Immaculate Heart of Mary with a strong faith in God. While attending high school one of the many things she loved was dominating the court where she also became the basketball star. She later married Paul P. Stewart Sr and was blessed with six beautiful children. Mary Iris Stewart was so much more then just a sister, a wife, a mother or a grandmother. She was the root of her family's foundation. A pillar of strength and Valor. A woman who didn't complain but gave wisdom when she spoke. Instead of talking about setting an example, she done one better, Mary Iris Stewart became "The Example".
She became an Entrepreneur before many of us even knew what the word meant. As many would tell you, she began selling the best frozen cups and pickles not just within her own community but surrounding areas as well with love and a side of wisdom. Even though she would tell you what is on her mind with no filter she was slow to anger, never holding a grudge and quick to forgive. As much as she loved serving the community she loved seeing the faces of all the kids from all over that graced her door step all year round even more. After some time if one of those special faces hadn't shown up in a while she was sure to inquire of their family's well-being. Not only was she an Entrepreneur but she was also her own personal farmer, where she grew her very garden of peppers, tomatoes, okra, and cucumbers. Although it wasn't a massive garden that could feed the entire neighborhood she often shared with those around her ensuring that those around at least had something to eat even if it wasn't much. They all became her children, her family, and her life. She was the epitome of a village raising a child because far if she could; she always took care of others.
She leaves to cherish her memories a son and four daughters, Paul P. Stewart Jr., Victoria (John) Griffin, Irene (Charles) Victorian, Catherine McNeal, Alice (David) Carter-Bellard, 12 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 14 great great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives, church family and friends.
