On January 5, 1943, in the small community of Ville Platte, Louisiana, Mayola Espree was born to Lucille and Anatole Belair Fontenot. As their only child, she grew up treasured and deeply loved. From the beginning, Mayola’s life was marked by strength, humor, and an unwavering devotion to family.
Mayola built her life around caring for those she loved. A devoted homemaker, she found joy in cooking and made sure her family was greeted each evening with a hot, home-cooked meal. She was a fantastic cook, and each of her daughters proudly carries her gift for cooking—a legacy passed down with love from their mother’s kitchen. Later, once her children were grown, she extended her nurturing spirit into healthcare, serving others with the same kindness and commitment she gave her own family.
Family was the center of Mayola’s world. She cherished gatherings with friends and loved ones, but it was her grandchildren who brought her the deepest joy. She celebrated their achievements with pride, and her presence filled their lives with warmth, music, and laughter. Some of their fondest memories include her playful retellings of Finding Nemo and her knack for turning even serious moments into times of lightheartedness. Known affectionately as “Inspector Gadget,” she had a clever and resourceful way of finding solutions.
Beyond her love for family, Mayola found joy in the beauty of the world around her. She delighted in the sounds of the ocean on a sunny day, taking in its peace and power. Her favorite color was any shade of purple, a reflection of her vibrant, regal spirit.
Her life was not without its challenges, but Mayola faced them with a straightforward honesty and a sense of humor that kept those around her grounded. Her excellent memory and gift for storytelling ensured that family history, traditions, and laughter were always preserved.
On Friday, September 19, 2025, Mayola was called home to the Lord. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her husband, Gurvis Espree.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and faith. Mayola is survived by her four daughters, Anita Cosay (Herbert), Aundrea Tindal (Fred), Jeanell Frelot (Wallace), and Naomi Espree; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Each of them carries a part of her spirit, her humor, and her love.
As we remember Mayola, we find comfort in the words of Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Her journey on earth has come to an end, but her love will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
