Oscar Goins Obituary

Oscar Stevenson “Pee Wee” Goins entered life eternal on Wednesday December 3, 2025. He was born on May 25, 1949, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Nick named “Pee Wee” at birth by his parents due to his small size he grew up to be a “Solider”. He was the second of twelve children born to the late Willie C. and Eary Mae Blue Goins and was raised with strong faith and determination. At an early age Oscar accepted Christ and was baptized at Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor R.L. White. At the time of his passing, he was a member of Redemption Tabernacle Full Gospel Church under the leadership of Pastor Kenneth A. Goins. He was loved and cherished by all his family. He exuded strength and a deep resolve for whatever issues came his way. He “kept on keeping on” and always told his children to “Take the bitter with the sweet”.

Oscar attended Washington High School and completed his early education until the age of sixteen. Seeking direction and opportunity, he entered the Job Corps and was assigned to the center in Gary, Indiana. After completing the program, he returned home, where he worked at several jobs before answering a higher call to serve his country.

Determined to enlist in the miliary at seventeen years old, Oscar overcame every obstacle placed before him. When his parents declined to sign the enlistment papers because of his age, he pursued emancipation through the court system. In 1966 his persistence paid off as he officially enlisted in the United States Army. Knowing the financial hardship that the family was in the United States Army. Knowing the financial hardship that the family was in, Oscar made sure while in the service that part of his military allotment was sent back home to help with the family finances. During Basic training, he chose the challenging past of becoming a paratrooper and went on to join the elite 101st Airborne Division, known as the “Screaming Eagles.” His unit was later deployed to Vietnam, where he bravely served in combat and was wounded during hostile action. Following his injury, and through congressional  assistance requested by his devoted mother, Oscar returned to the United States and honorably discharged as a proud recipient of the following awards: Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Parachute Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and The Purple Heart.

After his military service, Oscar sought to build a  new future. He pursued his service-connected disability and also enrolled at McNeese State College. After a couple of semesters, he chose to follow in  his father’s footsteps and became a business owner. With the help and support of his parents and brothers, Oscar opened and operated the Twenty Grand, night club that became a part of the local community. It was also during this time that Oscar heard the drum beat of justice and feeling the plight of his fellow veterans and all of the obstacles they faced upon their return home that he was compelled to become an advocate for veterans rights, which lead him to become a co-founder of “The Black Veteran’s Association for Human Rights, Inc.”

Oscar Stevenson Goins was a man of courage, strong faith and no matter what the situation or what the circumstances, he lived by 1Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks….” He always gave thanks to his Lord and Savior.
