Paul Joseph Martin, Sr.

Paul Joseph Martin, Sr. was born on August 10, 1954, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Gilbert and Vircy Martin. The youngest of six children, three girls and three boys, Paul entered the world surrounded by family, love, and a foundation that would shape his steady and enduring spirit. Raised in Lake Charles, Paul attended First Ward Elementary, Reynaud Junior High School, and W.O. Boston High School. His early years reflected the rhythm of a close-knit community, where education, family, and faith were guiding forces. He later continued his studies at McNeese State University, carrying with him both ambition and quiet determination.

On May 21, 1973, Paul united in marriage with Sandra Johnson. From this union came two children, Sonietta Monique and Paul Joseph Martin II. As a father, Paul was present, steady, and proud, committed not only to providing, but to participating in the lives of his children in meaningful ways. In 1974, Paul made a life-changing move to Los Angeles, California, bringing his family with him in search of opportunity and growth. There, he built a career as an Aircraft Mechanic with McDonnell Douglas, dedicating over 25 years of skilled and faithful service. His work reflected his discipline, craftsmanship, and commitment to excellence.

Beyond his profession, Paul found joy in the simple and powerful moments of life. He coached his son in Little League Baseball, instilling lessons of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. He stood as a constant supporter of his daughter, showing up with quiet strength and unwavering presence. In 2004, Paul returned home to Lake Charles, Louisiana, not only to reconnect with his roots, but to care for his father in his later years. In that season of life, Paul became a devoted caregiver, living alongside his father, honoring him, and preserving the stories, wisdom, and history of their family, ensuring they would be carried forward to the next generation.

Paul leaves to cherish his memory his children, Sonietta Martin-Brown (Hardy) of San Bernardino, California, and Paul Joseph Martin II (Rikermy) of Lynwood, California, along with his daughter, Toni Perron of Lake Charles, Louisiana. Through them, his legacy continues in his grandchildren, Jordan Brown and Peyton Brown, and Jalen Martin and Malia Martin, a generation that reflects the values he lived by: hard work, higher education, community service, and athletic achievement.

He is also survived by his sister, Irene Clark of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends whose lives were touched by his presence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Vircy Martin; his sisters, Rena Mae Arceneaux and Della Mae Carrier; and his brothers, Gilbert Martin III and Love Martin Sr.

Paul Martin, Sr. Was a man of action and a true advocate for his community. He played a vital role in the rebuilding of his neighborhood, working tirelessly and giving his all to help others. With his assistance families were able to receive the help to restore and improve their home’s. His legacy of service and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
